Hello, my name is Jonathan Magnusson

I’m a DNS Specialist at Internetstiftelsen (IIS) in DNS-Labs where I work on privacy-friendly resolver traffic analysis in DNS TAPIR and a DNS course offered to universities in Sweden.

I finished my bachelor’s degree at Karlstad University (KAU), Sweden in 2019 writing my thesis on Certificate Transparency Aggregation in DNS Caches, and I finished my master’s degree at KAU in 2021 writing my thesis on Evaluating a Traffic-Splitting Defence against Website Fingerprinting in Tor. I was a PhD student in the PriSec group at KAU from 2021 to 2026. My research area was Cybersecurity and Network Analysis of DNS and the research was sponsored by IIS [Article]. My lead supervisor throughout my studies was Tobias Pulls (KAU) and my co-supervisors were Anna Brunström (KAU) and Johan Stenstam (IIS). While working towards my PhD I have also finished my licentiate degree at KAU in 2025, writing my thesis on Cybersecurity Mechanisms in DNS Resolvers. In 2026 I defended my dissertation titled Measuring Adoption, Implementation, and Impact of Available Privacy Solutions in DNS Resolvers.

During my time at KAU I have also been a Teaching Assistant at several courses and a Project Assistant for the EU H2020 project PAPAYA (Platform for privacy perserving analytics). In 2022 I established the KAUotic Hacking Club at KAU and I contributed a lot to the Ethical Hacking course, where I focused on Capture-The-Flag challenges and an open-source cyber range platform for education called Cyber Range Lite.
